Teeth can become stained over time due to age or diet (some foods and drinks, such as coffee, red wine and tea – can affect the colour of the teeth). Teeth whitening is an effective and safe way to lighten the colour of your teeth.
This is the safest and most predictable method of teeth whitening. You should be able to see initial results within the first few days and most patients find that 4 weeks of whitening every night is sufficient for a whiter smile that they are happy with, but this varies from patient to patient.
If you have more complex discolouration (such as from certain antibiotics) it may require months rather than weeks to see results.
For whitening, we will create custom acrylic trays for you to use at home and use no more than 16% Carbamide Peroxide (6% Hydrogen Peroxide), which is a safe and effective dose. Some patients may experience slight tooth sensitivity, gum irritation and reddening. These are transient effects and your teeth and gums will go back to normal once the treatment is finished.
The benefit of this procedure over veneers or crowns, is that we preserve your natural tooth tissue and don’t damage the enamel or nerve.
After having root canal treatment, some patients can experience discolouration of teeth. In some circumstances it is possible to mask this greyness by whitening the tooth from the inside. This is called Inside/Outside Whitening.
As with home whitening, we create customised acrylic trays for you to use at home. However, for this procedure we will remove the filling which already exists on the back of the tooth, prepare the affected tooth to enable you to place the carbamide perioxide gel inside by exposing the cavity; this will be left open for 4-7 days before being closed with a filling once you are satisfied with the outcome. After this, you will continue to use the whitening trays to whiten your teeth from the outside.
The benefit of this is that you are able to retain the tooth structure instead of cutting down the tooth for a veneer or a crown.
We tailor each treatment to the individual patient and during your consultation, we will compare the colour of your teeth against our shade guide. This will enable us to give you a rough guide as to how much whiter your teeth can become.
